Global medical register directory

Check the right register, wherever a doctor is licensed.

Find current regulator and government sources across world regions, learn which fields matter, and use a documented manual route where no dependable online check exists. One country's record never becomes a global licence.

What a register can support

A live official record can support a finding about the registration type, status, dates, scope, conditions and specialist entry that the authority actually publishes.

What it does not prove

A match alone does not prove identity, competence, clinical quality, employment, hospital privileges, every specialty claim or authority outside that jurisdiction.

What happens without an API

The route stays open. A reviewer uses the current regulator source or direct official confirmation, records the evidence and date, and leaves ambiguity unresolved—not approved.

International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities (IAMRA)

Search using
Country or medical regulatory authority
What to check
Use IAMRA to identify a public register or regulator, then complete a manual source check with that authority.
Read before deciding
IAMRA is a regulator directory, not the licensing authority. A SameCase review must still use the relevant authority's own record or direct confirmation.

United States

State medical boards via the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB)

Search using
State or territory, then physician name or licence number
What to check
Open the board for every state or territory where the doctor claims authority to practise and confirm current status and restrictions.
Read before deciding
US medical licences are state-based. An NPI or an entry in NPPES identifies a healthcare provider; it is not, by itself, proof of a current medical licence.

Canada — most provinces and territories

Provincial and territorial medical regulatory authorities via FMRAC

Search using
Province or territory, then the regulator's public register
What to check
Select the authority for the province or territory of practice and confirm the class, status, conditions and expiry shown there.
Read before deciding
Canada has separate provincial and territorial licensing systems. Ontario is not on FMRAC's current member list, so use the separate Ontario pathway below. A result from one jurisdiction does not establish authority in another.

Search using
CPSO number, name, location, doctor type, specialty or hospital privileges
What to check
Confirm the physician's registration status, class, restrictions and specialty information in the CPSO Physician Register.

The register includes active physicians and some inactive physicians. Read the status and dates rather than treating a name match or past entry as a current Ontario licence.

Reusable worldwide method

A register check that survives borders

Terminology changes from place to place; the reasoning should not. Keep each conclusion narrow, traceable to its source and tied to the jurisdiction where it applies.

  1. Locate the issuing jurisdiction

Start with the place that issued the registration and the place where the professional claims authority to practise. They may not be the same.

  2. Use a current primary source

Open the regulator or government source itself. Do not rely on an advert, clinic page, search snippet, copied certificate or applicant-provided screenshot.

  3. Resolve the person with two identifiers

Prefer a registration number plus the registered professional name. Where appropriate, compare the profession, location, qualification or regulator-recorded workplace.

  4. Read the status—not just the match

Record the register type, current status, effective or expiry date, scope, conditions, restrictions and specialist entry actually displayed.

  5. Verify identity separately

A genuine record can be misused by someone else. Keep the identity check private and separate from the professional-registration check.

  6. Escalate uncertainty and recheck

Contact the authority through an official channel when records conflict or are unavailable. Record the source and review date, and recheck time-limited status.

A path for every jurisdiction

No public register? Keep the applicant in review.

Find the medical authority through IAMRA or the jurisdiction's government health service. Request direct official confirmation or the minimum private evidence the authority requires. Keep identity documents and registration numbers out of public profiles, and do not approve an account from a self-entered number alone.

If the authority cannot confirm the record, the verification remains pending. That is a safe unresolved result—not a shortcut to approval and not an assumption that the applicant is unlicensed.

Worldwide fallback source

IAMRA lists medical regulatory authorities and public-register resources across jurisdictions. Use it to find the authority, then verify at the authority itself.

Find a regulator

Important distinctions

Medical-register questions

Does a medical-register match prove a doctor's identity?

No. A register result describes a regulator's record. It does not prove that the person presenting the number is the registrant. Identity must be checked separately, using appropriate private evidence and more than a name alone.

Does registration in one country allow a doctor to practise everywhere?

No. Medical licences and registrations are jurisdiction-specific. Countries may regulate nationally, while others use states, provinces, territories, cantons, federal states or emirates. The relevant question is whether the professional is authorised for the claimed activity in the place where it occurs.

What if a country is not in this curated directory?

Use the worldwide IAMRA public-register resource to identify the appropriate medical regulatory authority. Then complete a manual check using the authority's current website or direct official confirmation. Absence from this page is not evidence that a country has no regulator.

What if an official search returns no result?

Do not conclude that the person is unlicensed from one failed search. Check spelling, name variants, registration number, profession, register type and issuing jurisdiction. Some sources are incomplete, delayed or not public. Contact the authority and keep the verification unresolved until the discrepancy is explained.

Is a verified badge a recommendation or proof of competence?

No. A verification state can describe the identity and registration evidence checked for an account at a point in time. It is not an endorsement, a clinical-quality score, proof of employment or privileges, confirmation of every specialty claim, or a substitute for employer credentialing and current regulator checks.

Official-source links reviewed 4 September 2026. Regulators may change services, fields and URLs; use the live authority record for any current decision. This directory is an educational starting point, not a background check, recommendation, legal determination or substitute for required credentialing.
